Current Contract - Article 15 - Evaluations

Section 1: Purpose
Evaluation of teachers must have as its goal the spiritual and professional growth of the teacher. It should allow for the development of a close relationship between the teacher and the evaluator which will enable the teacher to benefit from the spiritual and professional experience and leadership of the evaluator. This relationship will also enable the evaluator to come to a greater understanding of how best to help the teacher grow spiritually and professionally in his/her role as a Catholic educator.

Section 2: Objectives

A.  To provide an opportunity for the spiritual and professional growth of the teacher.

B.  To provide an opportunity to improve rapport between the teacher and the evaluator.

C.  To provide an opportunity to encourage the development of Christian community and the sharing of the Gospel message.

D.  To provide an opportunity for appraisal using specific criteria.

E.   To provide a basis for determining re-employment or nonrenewal.

Section 3: Teacher Observation
Every teacher should be observed each year on an ongoing basis. New teachers will be observed more frequently than experienced teachers. In order to foster true community spirit and wholesome rapport, the principal/director should be invited to visit classrooms often. The principal/director should also make unscheduled, informal visits.

Section 4: Formal Supervisory Visit
Every formal supervisory visit should have a definite objective and should be followed by a principal/director/teacher conference which includes a discussion of the observation and the written report.

Section 5: Evaluations Sent to Office of Catholic Schools
In mid-May, a teacher evaluation form is to be sent to the Office of Catholic Schools for each teacher. This form will become part of the teacher's personnel file in the diocesan office.

This evaluation form and the written observation reports that are filed in the school office throughout the year should be signed by the teacher and the principal. The teacher's signature is not meant to constitute agreement with the evaluation report but is an indication that the teacher has seen the report.

The teacher may respond to any evaluation report by submitting a written statement. The teacher's statement will be attached to the report and filed.
