Current Contract - Article 6 - Leaves

A.  Each teacher shall be entitled to ten (10) sick days per year. Unused sick days from the preceding two academic years may be accumulated to a maximum of twenty (20) days. Each teacher shall utilize the sick leave granted for the current year before utilizing accumulated sick leave from prior years. When a teacher utilizes three (3) consecutive days of sick leave, or in any circumstances where the Principal suspects sick leave is being misused, the Principal may require medical verification from the teacher.

B.  Each teacher shall be provided a written account of accumulated sick days available to the teacher for the preceding two academic years from the Principal on or before October 15 of the current academic year.

C.  Each teacher shall be entitled to personal leave of two (2) days during each academic year. Personal leave is available for attending to personal, legal, religious or business matters which require absence during working hours, and is subject to prior approval of the Principal.  Unused personal leave shall not be accumulated.

D.  Each teacher shall be entitled to bereavement leave up to three (3) days following the death of a member of the teacher's immediate family.  The immediate family is defined as spouse, child, mother, father, brother, sister, mother-in-law or father-in-law.

E.  In each instance when a teacher needs to use bereavement leave, the teacher shall give notice to the Principal as soon as practicable. The Principal has the right to request proof of the deceased's relationship to the teacher. A teacher shall not be entitled to bereavement leave if at the time of the death and subsequent funeral, the School calendar does not require the presence or services of the teacher, or if the teacher is on leave or otherwise absent from work for other reasons.

F.  In the event more than three (3) School days elapse between the first day a teacher is absent for bereavement leave and the day following the conclusion of funeral services, or if a teacher needs additional time prior to returning to work after the death of a member of the teacher's immediate family, the teacher shall have the right to use not more than two (2) days of personal leave or sick leave in addition to the bereavement leave granted in this Article.

G.  A teacher unable to work due to.a medical condition, including pregnancy, extending more than seven (7) consecutive calendar days, will be placed on disability leave. A teacher shall have the obligation to notify the Principal as soon as practicable when a disability leave is anticipated. In pregnancy situations, this notice should be at least sixty (60) days prior to the anticipated disability date. Medical verification of actual disability may be required by the Principal.

H.  Each teacher who requires a disability leave may return to work as soon as the disability has ended.  The Principal may require medical verification that the teacher is able to return to work.

I.  A teacher who has given notice of an anticipated disability, including pregnancy, may request an unpaid leave of absence that would begin immediately following conclusion of the disability leave. This includes leaves of absence for child rearing purposes. All aspects of the unpaid leave of absence shall be governed by the provisions of paragraph K below.

J.  A teacher who adopts a child may apply to the Principal at least thirty (30) days prior to the adoption for an unpaid leave of absence commencing on a date specified by the teacher for child rearing purposes. All aspects of the unpaid leave of absence shall be governed by the provisions of paragraph K below.

K.  A teacher may apply for an unpaid leave of absence. Except for child rearing leaves as specified in paragraphs I and J above, an unpaid leave shall begin only on the first day of the School year, and request for such leave must be submitted to the Principal by April I of the preceding School year. In all instances, an unpaid leave of absence shall end on the last day of a School year. The maximum length of an unpaid leave of absence shall be one School year, except that when a child rearing leave of absence commences during a School year, it may continue, at the option of the teacher, until the end of the current School year or the end of the following School year.

L.  A teacher who is summoned for jury duty will make every effort to reschedule such service outside the normal School year. The School shall cooperate and support the efforts of the teacher for this purpose.
