Boston Archdiocesan Teachers Association
Current Contract - Article XVI - Temporary Leaves of Absence

1. Teachers will be entitled to the following temporary leaves of absence with pay each school year:

a. Three (3) days leave of absence for religious, personal, legal business, household or family matters which require absence during school hours. Application for personal leave will be made at least seventy-two (72) hours before taking such leave (except in the case of emergencies) and the applicant for such leave will not be required to state the reasons for taking such leave other than that he is taking it under this Section. Personal days may not be taken on the day immediately before or after a holiday or vacation.

b. At least one (1) day for the purpose of visiting other schools or attending meetings or conferences of educational nature may be granted at the discretion of the principal.

c. Time necessary for Association representatives to attend conferences and conventions of the National Association of Catholic School Teachers.

d. Time necessary for appearances in any legal proceeding connected with the teacher's employment or with the school system or in any other legal proceeding if the teacher is required by law to attend. The Corporation will deduct from the employee's daily pay any amount received by the employee in connection with said legal proceeding.

e. Up to five (5) days at any one time in the event of death or serious illness requiring bedside or household attention by the teacher of a teacher's spouse, child, parent or other member of the immediate household. Teachers will be granted one (1) day at any one (1) time in the event of death or serious illness requiring bedside or household attention of a teacher's son-in-law, daughter-in-law, father-in-law, mother-in-law, or sibling. Additional bereavement leave may, when necessary, be granted by the principal.

f. Every person who is a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States shall be granted, in accordance with Section 59 of Chapter 33 of the General Laws, leave of absence, without loss of pay during the time of his/her annual tour of duty as a member of such reserved component; provided, however, that such leave shall not exceed seventeen (17) calendar days. If the teacher has the choice he will fulfill his/her reserve military duty in the summer months. If the seventeen (17) days are exceeded because of an emergency call-up then the employee called up shall be entitled to an additional leave of absence with pay for an additional twenty (20) calendar days. However, the pay for the additional twenty (20) days shall be an amount which provides the teacher with the difference between what he earns from the government and what he would earn as a teacher during that period of time.

2. Leaves taken pursuant to Section 1 above will be in addition to any sick leave to which the teacher is entitled. No teacher will be required to arrange for his/her own substitute. Where circumstances permit, teachers who have leave under this section shall leave a complete lesson plan and homework assignments for the person who is taking the place of the teacher.
