Altoona-Johnstown Catholic School Teachers Association
Current Contract - Preamble

SECTION A
This Agreement is made and entered into by and between the Altoona-Johnstown Catholic School Teachers Association and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown.

SECTION B
Both parties signatory to this Agreement share the desire to establish the terms and conditions of the professional employment of teachers who are employed in one of the Diocese's three high schools. The purpose of this Agreement is to advance the educational objectives of the Diocese, to indicate the authority and the responsibility of both parties, and to provide a reasonable and equitable means of adjusting differences between the parties.

SECTION C
Both parties recognize the uniqueness of the Catholic school, established to provide within the framework of Catholic principles an educational alternative, and in that light intend that this Agreement will not in any manner interfere with the functions, duty, and responsibility of the Ordinary of the Diocese insofar as they are canonical or religious.

SECTION D
Both parties recognize the sole right and duty of the Ordinary of the Diocese to see that the doctrine, teaching, philosophy, laws and norms of the Roman Catholic Church are the basis for the operation of the schools. Both parties recognize the sole prerogative of the Ordinary of the Diocese to determine what will be taught and who will be permitted to teach in the area of faith, morals, doctrine, theology, and the laws and norms of the Church. Subject to the laws of the Church, the Ordinary shall maintain the sole prerogative to dismiss a teacher for serious or public immorality, public scandal, or rejection of official teaching, doctrine, or laws of the Roman Catholic Church. In the event that the Ordinary exercises such prerogative, the grievance-arbitration provisions of this Agreement shall not be applicable.

SECTION E
It is understood that the Diocese retains the sole right to operate the schools, to determine the policies controlling the operation of the schools and the conduct of its employees.

SECTION F
It is also understood that this Agreement will in no way affect any agreement between the Ordinary of the Diocese and the Religious Communities serving the schools, now or in the future.
